You’re at your wits end! You’re sick and tired of struggling with your body and you have decided THIS time you will make a proper commitment.
Because you decide to go all in. “I just need to kickstart things off” you think to yourself. “I just need to get back on track as quickly as possible. So what I’m going to do is cut out all sugar and refined carbs as soon as possible….for a month Then once I start seeing a change on the scales and can go back to a more sustainable approach.”
At face value that seems to make sense. Unfortunately, here’s what will actually happen –
1. STARVATION MINDSET
Your brain learns that certain foods are banned and unavailable. So the next time you allow yourself some sugar what happens? Your brain thinks “This is amazing! But if history has taught me anything it’s that there’s another period of restriction around the corner so let’s satisfy not just this craving, but every future craving I could ever possibly have!” Cookies, chocolate galore here I come!
2. DESPERATION MINDSET
If you struggle with weight loss the chances are you have a fear of never getting there. If so, you probably need CONSTANT reassurance that you can get there. Which leads you to do things like needing a “kickstart” as well as weighing yourself every day. Oohhhh THOSE SCALES!
You don’t weigh yourself for the objective, scientific data….. What you’re really wanting is, “Please reassure me that I can still do it!”
So now, the ONLY way you can remain motivated is if you’re constantly making massive progress every day. Losing weight every day, getting fitter every day, getting stronger every day.
That’s not how motivation works. If the ONLY way you can stay motivated is when everything is working perfectly and there are no obstacles or setbacks, how sustainable is that?! It’s not realistic.
So of course as soon as you go to your “sustainable approach”, progress slows, you think, “This isn’t working anymore, what’s the point?!” and quit! AGAIN!
3. REINFORCING “ALL OR NOTHING”
The art of fat loss is learning how to navigate the grey areas: work functions, social events, birthdays, weddings, or unforeseen circumstances when you’re knocked out of your regular routine. Basically dealing with life in general.
When you’re a perfectionist it’s either a good day or a bad day. So you have no idea how to navigate these grey areas, so you throw your toys out the pram, and think “F**k it! Start again on Monday!”
Following the “Kickstart” approach to fat loss only reinforces this all or nothing mindset even further.
Rebound is inevitable. For some people it’s immediate. For other people it’s a gradual process of cutting more corners, losing motivation bit by bit, and slowly returning to their old ways.
FALL IN LOVE WITH THE PROCESS NOT THE DESTINATION. Make health and fitness part of your IDENTITY.
Whatever changes you make to your lifestyle you must be happy and willing to sustain it all year round, for the rest of your life. This is not just for 2 months, 6 months until I lose the weight – it’s a lifestyle change.
So get clarity on how you’re going to live your life from this point moving forwards. A great mindset shift for many people here is to fall in love with the process, not the destination.
Learn to fall in love with health and fitness so that you would never not do it. It is such an important value for you that you get emotionally rewarded for it every time, regardless of where you’re at in your journey. You’d never NOT live your life that way because now you have real clarity on what you want and why you want it, both short and long term.
When you fall in love with the process, the destination takes care of itself. It might happen faster or slower than you expected. You might have unforeseen obstacles or setbacks along the way. But none of that matters. Success is inevitable, it’s just a matter of WHEN.
